The Stemler Sport Performance  Hypnosis Project.


If you flick through the internet  searching "hypnosis" the chances are that you will quickly stumble on a cultish  new age world of therapy, where tree hugging hippies  will council you  and try and cure you.

If you have a collection of problems  from smoking to fear of flying, maybe you can  sign up for hypnotherapy

Inevitably, like many "therapies' this will take numerous sessions, visualisations,  a script to read to yourself time and time again and hours of being talked at.

The is now a massive body of online  literature discussing NLP,, relaxation and feel good positive thinking . Your reactions to this movement, like me, may be a bit suspicious. I must admit most people who  claim to use positive thinking,  "Every day , in every way, I'm getting better and better" often seem less than impressive


But, lets face it Talking to yourself it a good thing. Being nice to yourself is a good thing: churches, religion, apricot scrubs, head massages are all good and relaxing things.

But what  do you do if you  screw up your  back flick, fail your back tucks and refuse to get under the bar in an olympic lift. Why do you slow down in  a sprint when you sort of know you can go faster. Why does a bit of lung  discomfort make you go slower when you know you can rest in a mere 20 seconds time.

That's probably something to do with the relationship between the conscious and the subconscious mind

 Many Hypnotists ( like me) guess that the  subconscious is rather like a bright 9 year old child. It learns very quickly and "gets it". Then problem is that its guarded by a terrified, bigoted "phobic"  adult mind:. Otherwise know as the logical, mature, adult brain.

Imagine an obsessive  emotional mother

 In many cases to overcome fear, and poor performances you need to leapfrog over the conscious mind.  

The conscious mind  isn't  "king" 

Remember how much the subconscious mind does. It breaths, digests, moves limbs, and when you see top performers, it expresses physical superiority through relaxed fluid movement. When you see jerky panic, that's the conscious mind

 As a crossfit trainer my whole job is , to put it simply , to access the sub conscious. With correct coaching, perfect practice and repetition and feedback we try and drive unfamiliar movements into our subconscious. Our battle is with a  conscious mind that wants to panic, add unnecesary movements and cut essential ovements short

But shouldn't relaxation, visualisation, therapy  and reading scripts help that? Maybe it could, but often those protocols seems to take as long as physical practise session. Obviously if you are stuck on  atrain, why not visualise your golf swing

Id suggest  if you have  a busy lifestyle, a longwinded "mental" approach, may not be the best one to take

Lecturing the subconscious  as if it's a moron, often isn't needed.  The body manages thousands of processes.

Once coached, It probably knows how to back flick, front tuck or do a handstand.

So lets Assume you have been properly taught.  You probably  know the standard coaching drills and cues. But youstill don't get it. You don't need  me  to  make you relaxed and nag you ! Its more likely your subconscious just needs a bit of  support to do the right thing….

Dealing with sports problems is often contaminated with other therapy modalities. You don't need to relive past trauma to fix your golf swing . As  fellow  hypnotist , Carl Smith, often says, you don't need to dig up the past to build your future

 But isn't long winded therapy session the only thing available?

 What if we could access the subconscious really fast, tell it what to do,  and get on with our life

What if, I could go, "123, you're under", then drop your sports performance suggestion in, then bring you back.

Wouldn't that be cool!

So this what I'm testing, Can I improve your performance by using my hypnotic skill?

The simple reality is that some people can be hypnotised easily, others not.

So obviously this test is open to all who can be hypnotised in what ill call a "stage hypnosis model" ( some use the words "snap inductions")

By working with the likes of Jon Chase, I've compiled a quick testing package that should, within 7 minutes, work out if you can easily be hypnotised. ( I can actually do it in 30 seconds for the right person, but thats just showing off).

Once I know you can be hypnotised, Im developing this protocol:

1) You  identify the  sport problem, or  (sport) problem move.

2) You find a you tube clip of the exercise being done

3) You video yourself doing the move.

4) You write a short essay (or notes) describing what you need to do to  move your present performance to the proper or perfect performance.

5) You get your 2 videos and notes checked over by your coach who confirms you have the right problems.

So, knowing that you "know" what to do, Ill hypnotise you and  give your subconscious permission to turn your (presumably) poor performance into a better  one.

Obviously there is a stage where you are wholly suggestible  so you may  either  record the session or bring a friend to sit in.
